The ashes function as a kind of intermediary (as its close to the fire in origin) and you can transfer some of the heat from the fire directly into the forge and light it up. So they can link a pile of ashes from a fire to the fire itself and then link the ashes to (for example) a forge. Powerful mages in the KKC are able to craft multiple links at once. Lift up an X-Wing out of the swamps of Dagobah? You better be strong enough to actually be able to lift that X-Wing (and probably even more). In summary: Even for a perfect sympathetic link, you still need to provide the necessary energy to actually accomplish the thing that you want to do. You can link fires to other things and use them as a source of power, and you can even use the warmth of your own blood to provide the necessary energy for what you want to do (although this is fairly dangerous as you easily draw too much heat and suffer from hypothermia afterwards). The whole magic thing in the KKC is based around these links. A horse and a metal bead have nothing in common, and as such the horse will become MUCH heavier, even if the bead only weighs a few g. Now lifting one of those beads by linking it to (for example) a horse will be VERY inefficient. The first bead will now be probably like 3 times the mass, or 4 times. It still won't be THAT much more, as the beads are still similar in shape, but the material will make a difference and you will lose "x" amount of work that you put into the system to the sympathetic link. Now the link gets weaker and as such you will need to invest more work to lift up both beads at once. Now you have two beads that are identical in size, but they are made of different materials. So lifting the first bead becomes harder.įor two items that are THAT similar you will not lose much energy during the transfer, so in first approximation we can say that lifting the first bead (that is linked to the second one) will take about twice the amount of work (as you are effectively lifting twice the mass). BUT the first bead actually becomes heavier due to the link. Now you lift up one of the beads and the other one lifts up as well. You can create a sympathic link between them that transfers energy of motion. You have two identical looking small beads of metal. The more "like" the things you link are, the less energy you lose. The term comes from the fact, that magic-proficient people do "nothing more" but create links between things that are "similar" to transfer energy between them.
